Table of Contents Table of Contents Accessing ANU Online Resources from Off Campus Information Commons is the name of the shared ANU computing environment. The Information Commons is both a physical and virtual environment. Physically it includes computer labs and computer workstations in lecture theatres, Library buildings and residence halls, as well as the ANU network. It is also a virtual environment in that it includes ANU wireless, accessible from many locations on campus, and any member of the ANU community can login to the Information Commons from anywhere in the world. On campus, the Information Commons includes an integrated printing system and a digital media suite. All Information Commons computers and computing locations are identified by the Information Commons sign
All Information Commons computers provide:
To login to an Information Commons computer you will need your UniID and password. Enter your UniID (in the form of u1234567) where you are asked for your user name, and enter the same password you use for access to ISIS or HORUS. A list of the locations of Information Commons computers can be found online. An integrated printing system is a crucial aspect of the on campus Information Commons computing environment. There is a print station located near all the different Information Commons computer workstations, and colour and specialty printing are also available in select locations. Twice a year students are allocated a modest Print Quota to assist with printing needs. The locations of printers within the Information Commons can be found online. Neither students nor staff can save personal files on any Information Commons computer. However, you are allocated disk space in your Home Folder, which accessible from any Information Commons workplace. Your standard quota is 250 Mbytes. This allocation is used to stop people filling up the server, and to provide a fair share for everyone. If you are enrolled in a course that requires more disk space, you will automatically be allocated extra file space. Once you have filled all your disk space you are not able to write new files or change existing ones. Some applications do not function when you have used up your disk space. Alternatively, you can save your personal files on your own removable storage media. If you need to create larger files than your allocation allows, ask your course supervisor to contact the Help Desk on extension 59666, or visit Ask ANU in Chifley and speak to a Consultant. All students and staff members are allocated an initial web traffic quota of 40Mbytes. Your quota is topped-up daily by an additional 10Mbytes, and capped at 80Mbytes. This web traffic quota is usually sufficient to enable you to do all the web research required for your assignments. In addition, many Library databases and a number of educational sites can be accessed without using any of your quota. If you do run out of web traffic quota and need to complete an academic assignment, visit the Ask ANU Consultants in Chifley. The easiest way for students and staff to access ANU online resources from off campus is to open a web browser such as Safari or Internet Explorer, type in the url http://virtual.anu.edu.au, and then enter your UniID and password as requested. You will then have access to the same online resources available to the entire ANU community. |
